Once upon a time, Fort Lauderdale, Florida was known almost exclusively for being a popular spring break destination among college students.

But in recent years, Fort Lauderdale has cracked down on spring breakers in an effort to improve its image. And while there are still plenty of students who descend upon the city every year for spring break, Fort Lauderdale has forged a new reputation as the so-called "Venice of America."

One of the ways Fort Lauderdale has changed its perception is by offering a long list of watersports to visitors. Fort Lauderdale watersports are world-class at this point with a slew of watersports offered all along the 23 miles of beach that stretch across the coast of the city.

If you love spending time in and around the water, Fort Lauderdale is definitely the place to be. Here are some of the watersports available in the area.

Snorkeling

Are you one of the roughly 8 million Americans who enjoys snorkeling on a regular basis? Or are you looking to embark on your very first snorkeling adventure? Fort Lauderdale is pretty much the perfect place to go if you like to get into the water to snorkel. The Atlantic Ocean that surrounds Fort Lauderdale is filled with everything from underwater gardens to tropical fish and even turtles. There are plenty of great snorkeling spots all along the coast of Fort Lauderdale. You'll see so many amazing things when you spend even just an hour in the water.

Scuba Diving

Once you've gone snorkeling in Fort Lauderdale, you're going to be intrigued. You're not just going to want to spend all afternoon sitting on the surface and looking down. You're going to want to make your way down to see what else you can find in the water. Fort Lauderdale is often called the "Wreck Capital of Florida," and it won't take you very long to see why. There are more than 50 real and artificial wreck sites scattered all along the Fort Lauderdale coast that will provide you with hours of fun. Fort Lauderdale is also home to one of the only coral reefs that you'll find in the entire country. You can check it out for yourself during your scuba diving expedition.

SeaBobing

Would you like to take your scuba diving expedition to the next level? You can do it by renting a SeaBob and exploring the Fort Lauderdale waters with it.

If you're not familiar with what a SeaBob is, it's the fastest underwater scooter in the entire world. It can give you the opportunity to zip around underneath of the water by simply pressing a button. There are places to rent SeaBobs in Fort Lauderdale so that you can experience what it's like to get around while using one. It won't be long before you're hooked on it and using it to explore parts of the ocean that you never thought you would be able to see.

Jet Skiing

Do you want to keep your head above water while visiting Fort Lauderdale? That's completely understandable when you consider all of the awesomeness that you'll find when you ride around on top of the water that surrounds the city. You can do it by renting a jet ski from one of the many jet ski rental places in Fort Lauderdale. Whether you've ridden jet skis before and know exactly how to do it or want to take a jet ski out for the very first time, you should give it a try.

When you're riding around on a jet ski, you'll be able to get a glimpse of what makes Fort Lauderdale so special from the water. You'll also be able to feel the breeze blowing through your hair as you reach speeds of 60 miles per hour or more. Taking at least one trip around Fort Lauderdale on a jet ski is pretty much a must during a trip to the city.

Water Skiing

You don't necessarily need to go jet skiing to have a great time gliding across the surface of the water in Fort Lauderdale. There are also other Fort Lauderdale watersports that will give you the opportunity to do it.

For example, you might want to give water skiing a try. There are actually water skiing schools located right in Fort Lauderdale that will teach you how to do it. You might fall off a few times before getting the hang of it, but that's all part of the fun. Once you see how it's done, you'll be able to strap on some skis and fly through the water without a care in the world. It'll make you love spending time in and around the water even more than you already do.

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding is a lot like water skiing. The biggest difference between the two is that you rely on a wakeboard, which is sort of like a snowboard, as opposed to water skis while wakeboarding. It's usually best to start with water skiing and master that before moving on to wakeboarding. But if you don't want to do that, it's not a problem at all! There are so many places to wakeboard in Fort Lauderdale to see what it's all about.

You can even take wakeboarding classes from a wakeboarding world champion when you're in Fort Lauderdale if you want. You'll get a brand-new appreciation for the sport once you start taking part in it for yourself.

Flyboarding

Most people are under the impression that they would need to have a superpower in order to fly. But what if we told you that that simply isn't the case?

You can "fly" during your Fort Lauderdale vacation when you sign up to take flyboarding lessons. An instructor will strap a pair of high-powered jets to your feet and show you exactly how to use them to fly high up into the skies over Fort Lauderdale.

Flyboarding is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you'll never forget. It'll make you remember visiting Fort Lauderdale forever.

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

Do you want to use Fort Lauderdale watersports to get in a workout during your stay in the city?

Just about all of the watersports that we've mentioned thus far will allow you to get some exercise. But the best one of the bunch for those interested in feeling the burn will no doubt be stand-up paddle boarding. This watersport will call for you to stand up on a paddle board and balance yourself while you paddle through the water. It might look easy to do when you're standing on land, but once you get out on your paddle board, it'll be a much different story.

Sport Fishing

If you enjoy sport fishing, you're going to absolutely love the fishing opportunities in Fort Lauderdale. You can fish for a wide range of different species and do it in a couple of different ways.

If you want to relax and have a good time while you fish, you can book a trip on a sport fishing boat in the area. It'll allow you to fish for everything from sailfish and wahoo to kingfish and sharks.

But that isn't the only way that you can check out the fishing scene in Fort Lauderdale. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can also try fishing straight out of a kayak with some of the more experienced fishermen in the area.

This is a great way to catch different types of fish like tuna, mackerel, and bass. Fishing out of a kayak will require you to keep your balance and maneuver yourself around in the water. But it's a unique experience that all fishermen should try at least once.

Yachting

If you stand on the beach in Fort Lauderdale and look out over the water, you'll likely see yachts zooming around all over the place. Some of these yachts are a lot faster than you might think. You can take a trip out on a yacht to see what it can do once it gets into the water. You can also enjoy all of the luxurious features that are jampacked into it.

Chartering a yacht will allow you to soak up all the sun you can manage. It'll also give you yet another view of both the water that surrounds Fort Lauderdale and Fort Lauderdale itself.
